Drive yourself, hop on a bus or join a tour. Here’s how to reach Subic Bay and get around Olongapo, Barretto and Zambales.
Driving yourself means you set the schedule and stop where you like. There are two ways to reach Subic Bay. The rural road takes about 3 hours. The alternative cuts that time in half: take the NLEX through San Fernando to Dau, then exit onto the Subic Bay Freeport Zone Expressway. Allow about 1 to 1.5 hours.
You can get from Manila to nearly all the major destinations in Luzon by air-conditioned bus. Saulog Transit and Victory Liner both run scheduled arrivals and departures in Olongapo. Victory Liner also has routes through the NLEX and SCTEX, and can drop you in Subic Bay’s CBD area at Ayala Harbor Point Mall.

Explore Olongapo and Barretto on foot. Walking the streets gives you a local’s view and a feel for the real thing. Then try the public transport: colour-coded jeepneys and tricycles run on assigned routes and are an affordable way to get around Olongapo City and Barretto.
A private car makes Zambales much easier, but you’ll still get by on public transport, which is a lot cheaper.
